The Council of Legal Education (CLE), through its Quality Assurance, Compliance and Accreditation (QCA) Department, conducted a pre-inspection audit of the University of Nairobi (UoN) School of Law, Kisumu Campus, on Wednesday, February 21, 2018. The CLE team was led by the Director, QCA, Ms Mary Mutugi. Other members of the team were Mr. Moses Mwaura and Ms Georgina Wabwire.

The audit began with presentations on the School of Law by the Associate Dean and the heads of support units (Finance, ICT and Library). These presentations provided a status report on various aspects of the School, including governance and management, strategic planning, financial commitment and projections, research, curriculum and curriculum development, the LLB degree programme (niche, admission requirements, student enrolment and completion rates, modes of delivery, use of ICT, integration of research and examinations processes), staffing, staff qualifications and research, and staff-student ratios, library and information resources and services, and infrastructure. Discussions then ensued in which CLE sought clarification on a number of areas.

The second major function was a tour of the various facilities of the School. The tour included the administration offices (including student records registry), the moot court and classrooms, the teleconferencing centre, the lecturers’ offices, the Library and e-resources and the Computer Laboratory. In the process, the CLE team also conducted independent surveys with a sample of students and academic staff of the School of Law.

After the tour, there was a close-out meeting during which subsequent activities were planned and time-lines agreed on. The activities included submission of information, on the basis of the CLE guidelines, by the School, and preparation of audit report and follow-up activities.

The event was attended by a strong, high-level team from the UoN Main Campus led by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic Affairs), Prof. Henry Mutoro, and composed of the Director of Self-Sponsored Programmes (CESSP) (Prof. Julius Ogeng’o), Director, Library and Information Services (Ms Angela Mumo), the Director ICT Centre (Mr. Christopher Muturi, the School of Law’s Acting Dean (Prof. Albert Mumma), the Chairs of Department (Dr. Nancy Baraza and Prof. Winnie Kamau), Chair, Examinations Committee (Mr. Trimba Machogu) and Assistant Registrar (Mr. Noel Manyenze). The Kisumu Campus was represented by the Director, the Associate Dean, School of Law, the Coordinators of the School of Business and Open, Distance and E-Learning Campus, heads of Library, ICT and health units, and academic and administrative staff and students of the School of Law.
