The School of Law, Kisumu Campus is collaborating with the Leonard Cheshire Disability (LCD) in a study whose main goal is to understand how girls with disability experience education in order to build on the evidence demonstrating the effectiveness of inclusive education. The research, covering five districts namely (Mbita, Migori, Kisumu East, Kuria East and Siaya), focuses on:

  • Out-of-school girls
  • Transition from primary to secondary school
  • The role of ‘Male Caregivers/Mentors’
  • Impact of (Kenyan Government) policies.

It is, essentially, a ‘tracer study’ whose objective is to establish the status of girls with disability who have been supported through interventions by LCD.

Ten Fourth Year law students were selected to carry out the interviews and assist in focus group discussions. The students attended a one-day training session at Vittoria Suites to prepare them for the field work in terms of the objectives, instruments and logistics.

During the training, Dr. Maria Kett dealt with the principles and practice of the research, putting emphasis on what is expected of the students in the preparations for, and conduct of, the study. The research instrument, a semi-structured questionnaire, was extensively discussed to ensure that it was logical and capable of eliciting the required information, and that all data collectors had a generally similar understanding/interpretation of the questions.

Dr. Kett urged the students to take advantage of the opportunity and put into practice what they have learned from their Research Paper unit.

The Associate Dean, Okech-Owiti, and two lecturers, Ronald Rogo and Caroline Shilaho, also attended the training session.
